Leather is cleaned, fed and protected, not just wiped

A proper leather clean is a three-stage job. First the grime: skin oils, food residue and the dark sheen that builds on arms and headrests are lifted with pH-balanced leather cleaner, worked into the grain and removed, not spread around. Then the feed: conditioner restores the moisture the hide loses to central heating and sunlight, keeping it supple rather than brittle. Finally a protective finish slows down the next round of soiling. A leather armchair runs £55 to £70, a three-seater £75 to £90.

What cleaning can and cannot fix

Cleaning transforms grubby, greasy, dull leather: the colour comes back, the surface feels right again, and light scratching fades into the grain. What it cannot do is repair. Cracking where the finish has broken down, colour worn through on seat edges, and cat-claw damage are repair territory, and honest operators say so at assessment and price cleaning and repair as separate decisions. Pigmented leather (the great majority of family suites) is the most forgiving; aniline and semi-aniline hides need gentler chemistry and are tested first.

The maintenance maths

Leather that is cleaned and conditioned yearly outlasts neglected leather by a wide margin: the conditioner is what stops the hide drying, stiffening and eventually cracking along the flex lines. Once cracking starts, no amount of conditioner reverses it. An annual £75 clean-and-feed on a £2,000 leather suite is cheap insurance, and it keeps the sofa looking like the one in the showroom rather than the one at the tip.
